Headlight restoration FAQ

Why do headlights turn yellow?

Headlight lenses are polycarbonate with a thin factory UV coating. Sun breaks that coating down over the years, the plastic oxidizes and turns yellow and hazy. Cars parked outside in the Charlotte sun get there faster.

How long does headlight restoration last?

With a UV-resistant coating on top, typically one to two years or more, depending on sun exposure. Without a new UV layer, a polished lens can yellow again within months — which is why every restoration we do ends with a coating.

Restore or replace?

Restore when the haze is on the outside. Replace when there’s moisture or cracking inside the lens, or when the plastic is crazed with fine cracks — sanding can’t reach those. A new headlight assembly often costs several hundred dollars per side.

Does it make a difference at night?

Yes. Hazy lenses scatter light instead of throwing it down the road. After restoration the beam is sharper and brighter, and oncoming drivers get less glare.

How long does it take?
