Your paint needs correction if…

If one of these sounds familiar, a wash or a wax won't fix it — the damage sits in the clear coat itself.

Spiderweb swirls in the sun
Fine circular scratches appear the moment the car hits direct light. They usually come from tunnel washes and dirty towels.
Dull, flat color
The car is clean but looks tired. Oxidation and micro-marring scatter light instead of reflecting it.
Marks that won't wash off
Bird droppings, bugs and tree sap left on hot paint burn a mark into the clear coat that soap can't remove.
Water spots
Mineral rings from sprinklers or hard water that sit in the paint after every wash.
Selling or returning a lease
Paint condition is the first thing a buyer or a dealer inspector looks at — and it shows in the offer.
Planning a ceramic coating
A coating locks in whatever is underneath, swirls included. Correct first, then seal.

What is paint correction?

Paint correction is machine polishing that removes a microscopic layer of clear coat to level out swirls, light scratches and oxidation.

Unlike a wax or a glaze, it doesn’t fill or hide defects — it removes them, so the result doesn’t wash off after the first rain. That’s also why it takes hours, not minutes: every panel is polished separately, with pads and compounds chosen for your paint.

Many people search for “car polishing”. At a car wash that usually means a quick machine wax. At SHINEWAGON, polishing means real correction — measured, inspected and protected afterwards.

What paint correction will — and won't — fix

We'd rather tell you now than after you've paid.

We remove
  • Swirl marks and holograms
  • Light scratches — keys, bags, fingernails around door handles
  • Oxidation and faded, chalky paint
  • Water spot etching
  • Light bird dropping, bug and tree sap etching
  • Haze and buffer trails left by a previous bad polish
We can't fully remove
  • Scratches that catch your fingernail — they go through the clear coat. Polishing softens them; touch-up or a body shop removes them.
  • Rock chips down to primer — touch-up, then paint protection film to stop new ones.
  • Dents and dings — that's paintless dent repair.
  • Peeling or failed clear coat — the panel needs a repaint.

The fingernail test: run a nail across the scratch. If it doesn’t catch, correction will most likely remove it. If it catches, we’ll improve it and tell you honestly how far. Send us a photo of it.

How paint correction works

01
Photo quote
Send 3–4 daylight photos. We reply with a level recommendation and a firm price.
02
Wash and decon
Foam bath, two-bucket wash, iron and tar removal, clay bar. Polishing a dirty surface grinds dirt into the paint.
03
Measure and inspect
We check paint thickness and inspect each panel under lamps to choose pads and compounds that are safe for your clear coat.
04
Machine correction
A test spot first, then panel by panel with dual-action polishers until the defects are gone.
05
Protect and walk around
Sealant or ceramic goes on, then we inspect the car together. You pay after you've seen it.

Planning a ceramic coating? Correct first.

A ceramic coating is a hard, clear layer that bonds to your paint for years. It protects whatever is underneath — swirls included. That’s why every coating we apply starts with at least a 1-step correction, and why booking both together saves you a second wash and prep.

Rock chips on the hood and front bumper? A coating won’t stop them — paint protection film will.

Why Charlotte paint needs correction more often

Strong sun, all year
Direct Southern sun shows every swirl and slowly oxidizes older clear coats and single-stage paint, especially on cars parked outside.
Pollen, sap and birds
Spring pine pollen, oak and pine sap and summer bird droppings are acidic. Left on hot paint for a few days, they etch the clear coat.
Tunnel washes on every corner
Brush and cloth tunnel washes are the most common cause of swirl marks we see. One correction undoes years of them.

No-risk booking

Firm price first
The price we quote from your photos is the price you pay, unless you add a service.
Pay after inspection
We walk around the car with you before any payment.
Fully insured
Your vehicle and your property are covered while we work on them.
Honest assessment
If polishing won't help a defect, we say so before you pay for it.

How to keep your paint swirl-free

Correction is permanent — new swirls come from how the car is washed next. Five rules that keep the result:

  1. Skip brush and cloth tunnel washes — touchless or hand wash only.
  2. Two-bucket hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo.
  3. Dry with a clean microfiber towel or a blower, never a bath towel.
  4. Remove bird droppings and sap within a day.
  5. Top up the sealant every few months — or coat the car once with ceramic.

Easiest option: our maintenance plan — a safe wash at your home every month, from $119.

Paint correction FAQ

What is the difference between 1-step and 2-step paint correction?

A 1-step enhancement uses one polishing stage that removes light swirls and brings back gloss in 4–6 hours. A 2-step correction adds a cutting stage with a heavier compound for deeper swirls and visible scratches, then refines the finish. It takes 1–2 days. Not sure which you need? Send photos and we will recommend the level honestly.

Will paint correction remove all scratches?

No, and anyone who promises that is guessing. Correction removes swirls, light scratches and etching that sit in the clear coat. A scratch that catches your fingernail goes deeper; polishing makes it less visible but can’t erase it safely. For those we suggest touch-up, a body shop or paint protection film.

Is paint correction safe for my clear coat?

Yes, when it is done with measurement. We check paint thickness before polishing and use the least aggressive pad and compound that does the job. A correction removes only a few microns of clear coat, and we never re-polish a car that doesn’t need it.

Can you do paint correction at my home, or do I need to bring the car in?

Both work. A 1-step enhancement is done at your home or office if you have a garage or a shaded spot. For 2-step correction, black cars and anything going under ceramic coating, we recommend our studio for controlled lighting and a dust-free surface. The price is the same.

How long does paint correction take?

A 1-step enhancement takes 4–6 hours. A 2-step correction takes 1–2 days depending on vehicle size and paint condition. Correction plus ceramic coating takes 1–2 days in our studio, including curing time.

How long do the results last?

The correction itself is permanent: removed defects don’t come back. New swirls appear only from washing, mostly brush tunnel washes and dirty towels. With hand washing and a sealant or ceramic coating on top, the finish stays clean for years.

Do I need paint correction before ceramic coating?

Yes. A coating is a clear, hard layer that locks in whatever is underneath, so coating over swirls preserves the swirls. Every ceramic coating we apply starts with at least a 1-step correction.

Does a new car need paint correction?

Often, yes. New cars are washed at the port and at the dealership, and those washes leave light swirls and holograms. A 1-step enhancement is usually enough, and it is the right moment to add ceramic coating or paint protection film.

Can you fix bird dropping and tree sap etching?

Fresh marks, usually yes. Bird droppings and sap are acidic, and in Charlotte summer heat they etch the clear coat within days. Shallow etching polishes out completely; deep etching is reduced but may stay faintly visible. The sooner you send us a photo, the better the outcome.
